Which plan fits?
Rough monthly numbers are enough. Images are counted once if you cache them.
No email needed. Comparison prices read from mapbox.com/pricing and Google Maps Platform pricing on Nov 5, 2026.
What counts as a request
| Product | Counts as one | Free of charge |
|---|---|---|
| Static map images | Each image generated by /v1/static | Your own browser and CDN caching of an image |
| Address lookups | Each call to /v1/geocode, /v1/autocomplete or /v1/reverse | Reusing stored results |
| Map tiles | Each raster or vector tile. A typical map view loads about 16. | Styles, fonts, sprites and TileJSON |
School attendance zones
Attendance zones are sold separately from the self-serve plans, as a data licence, from $1,500 a year per state or nationwide by quote.
Questions
Limits and overage
What happens at the cap?
That product returns HTTP 429 with monthly_cap_reached, the reset date and an upgrade link. Your other products keep working. We email you at 80% and at 100%. Nothing is ever billed for overage.
What is the no-overage guarantee?
Every plan stops at its cap; we have no overage pricing. If we ever bill you anything for usage over a cap, we refund the full fee for that month. It's in the Terms.
Can I get more in a busy month without changing plans?
Yes. On Starter, Growth or Business you can buy a top-up pack from your dashboard: $20, charged once, adds 100,000 static images, 100,000 address lookups and 1,000,000 map tiles to that month's caps (up to 10 packs a month). Packs are never bought automatically and never renew, so the no-overage promise still holds. If you need packs most months, the next plan up costs less.
Storage and marks
Can I store the images and geocoding results?
On paid plans, yes, for as long as you like, including in commercial products. On Free you may store results for up to 30 days. Either way, keep the OpenStreetMap credit with them. See the Terms.
Why is there a mark on Free images?
Free images carry a small "Map by mapiron.com" mark in the bottom-left corner. Any paid plan removes it. Copies you already saved keep the mark, so fetch them again after upgrading.
Plans, trials and billing
Do I need an account before I pay?
No. Choose a plan and pay with Stripe, and your account and API key are ready on the next page. If your email address already has a MapIron account, the plan is added to it and you sign in with that email as usual.
How can I pay?
Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link or US bank account (ACH) at checkout. Enterprise customers can also pay invoices by ACH or wire transfer on net-30 terms. Checkout collects your company's tax ID and an optional PO number.
Can I pay yearly?
Yes. Yearly plans cost 10 times the monthly price, so two months are free.
Do I need a credit card for Free?
No. Free includes commercial use.
Is there a free trial of a paid plan?
Yes. New accounts get the Growth plan's limits free for 14 days, with no card. Trial images carry the small Free mark and trial results may be stored for 30 days. When the trial ends the account moves to Free automatically and nothing is charged; we email you 3 days before.
Can I upgrade or change plans mid-month?
Yes. Upgrades take effect within a minute and are prorated through Stripe. Change or cancel any time from Manage billing in your dashboard.
What if I cancel?
You keep your plan until the end of the paid period, then drop to Free. Images and results you stored while on a paid plan stay yours to keep.
Do you offer refunds?
Yes, on your first payment. If MapIron isn't right for you, email billing@mapiron.com within 14 days of your first charge and we'll refund it in full.
Data and service
Is school data included in the self-serve plans?
No. US school districts and attendance zones come with a platform or enterprise contract, or as a data licence, by state or for the whole country, that you load into your own database (single states $1,500 to $5,000 a year, bought online; the whole country by quote from sales@mapiron.com). Coverage, a free sample and the licence are on School attendance zone data; platform pilots are on For IDX platforms.
Isn't school boundary data free from the government?
District boundaries and school locations are, from NCES. Attendance zones aren't published nationally: the federal School Attendance Boundary Survey covered only the 2013-14 and 2015-16 school years. Of the 68,382 schools in our data with a zone, 41,056 have one from a current district map, and the rest are labelled 2015-16. See the comparison.
Is Texas MUD and PID data included?
Yes, on Growth and Business: /v1/districts returns the Texas MUDs, WCIDs, management districts and PIDs at a point, with each district's tax rate, debt and the notice statute, for 1 address lookup each. The whole state as a file is a separate data licence ($4,800 a year, or $9,600 with display in your product).
How fresh is the map data, and how good are US house numbers?
Data comes from OpenStreetMap and is rebuilt regularly; the current build is from Nov 4, 2026. Streets and towns are reliable worldwide. US house numbers are good in some cities and thin in others, and we're adding a US address dataset to close the gap. Try your own addresses with the free plan before you buy.
Where does it run, and how reliable is it?
On our own servers in New York (DigitalOcean), behind Cloudflare. Live and 90-day uptime are on the status page. Business plans have a 99.5% monthly uptime target: below it you get a 10% service credit, and below 99% a 50% credit. Ask sales if you need a contract with more.
