Batch geocoder: addresses to latitude and longitude
Upload a spreadsheet saved as CSV, pick the address columns and download it with coordinates added. Your file stays in your browser.
Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. Keep this credit wherever you show or publish the results.
How it works
- Save your spreadsheet as a CSV file with a header row.
- Paste your key and pick the column or columns that make up each address (for example Street, City, State, ZIP).
- Press Geocode. The page looks up each different address once, at your plan's speed, and adds latitude, longitude, a clean one-line address, postcode, city, state, country, match type and a status to every row.
- Download the result and open it in Excel or Google Sheets.
Your file stays in your browser: only the address text goes to the MapIron API to be looked up. Each different address counts as 1 lookup; duplicates are free. If your plan's monthly lookups run out, the run stops, nothing is billed, and you can download what's done.
Status values
| OK | Found; coordinates filled in. |
|---|---|
| NO_MATCH | Nothing matched. Check the spelling, or add the city and state. |
| EMPTY | The address columns were blank in this row. |
| NOT_RUN | Not looked up yet (paused, or the monthly lookups ran out). Press Continue, or run the file again next month. |
| ERROR | MapIron was busy for this one. Press Continue to retry just these. |
Keep the results
Many geocoding services don't let you store their results. On MapIron's paid plans you may keep these coordinates in your spreadsheet or database indefinitely; on Free, for 30 days. See who lets you store geocoding results.
Prefer to stay in your spreadsheet? Use the Google Sheets add-on. Doing this every day? Automate it.
Questions
How many addresses can I geocode?
Up to 100,000 rows per file in this page, limited by your plan's monthly lookups: 10,000 on Free, 100,000 on Starter, 300,000 on Growth and 1,000,000 on Business.
Is my spreadsheet uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser. Only the address text of each row is sent to the MapIron API to look it up, the same as any API call.
How fast is it?
It runs at your plan's speed: about 4 addresses a second on Free and 10 or more on paid plans, so 10,000 addresses take roughly 40 minutes on Free and 15 minutes on a paid plan. Keep the tab open.
What does it cost?
Each different address is 1 lookup from your plan. There is never an overage bill: at the cap the run stops.
